An exhibition dedicated to Federico Fellini (1920 - 1993), one of the defining masters of post-war Italian cinema.
Until the 22nd of September, EYE film museum brings out under the spotlight of a new and broader stage, it's over many years preserved and screened collection of Fellini's rich and incisive film oeuvre. This exhibition delves into the sources of Fellini's rich imagination and highlights the vitality of his work which makes your last minute visit more than worth.
A Felliniesque universe.
The career of Federico Fellini spanned some forty years and made him perhaps the most illustrious of all Italian film makers. In those years titles appeared that have carved out a permanent niche in the memory of generations of film lovers. His characters become archetypes inhabiting a universe that we became to call 'Felliniesque'.
In that same universe Fellini's alter ego appears - often portrayed by Marcello Mastroianni - in different guises as a participant in a continuous parade of grotesque human failures.
Don't we all have some Fellini in us? Like his portrayed doubles: "I am Fellini!"
Dive into a world of imagination.
Fellini's way of exploring the creative process and his reflections on cinema encouraged him to leave the beaten track of reality and dive into the world of imagination: childhood memories, dreams and the subconscious mind took on an increasingly important role in his work. In his highly personal films, Fellini disregards the rules of storytelling and jettisons any form of logical narrative. The whole set up is so intelligently layered and diverting with it's humor that it feeds the mind like a nourishing meal in Fellini's own 'Roma'.
The Century of the Image.
The Exhibition at EYE is organised as a visual laboratory consisting of a large number of film projections and more than 400 documents. It doesn't follow any chronological order, but adopts Fellini's own view of the twentieth century - the century of cinema obviously, but also the century of mass media in general. There are newspapers and magazines (beautiful covers!) shown to illustrate the influence of television and advertising on the century of the image.
EYE made a division including 4 main chapters:
1) Popular Culture - Fellini's sources of inspiration take you from a selection of cartoons to his fascination for parades (catholic as well as political) and the dynamics in and around the circus piste. Fellini understood very well the upcoming popularity of rock music among the youth and used until then unknown rock bands in his movies which gain instant fame because of their participation;
2) At Work / At the set - Very interesting collage of pictures showing Fellini behind the camera and giving instructions to his team and/or actors at the set. Somehow you are given' the idea to understand a bit more his creative production process and yet no detail is revealed that doesn't under scribes Fellini's unique universe;
3) The City of Women - This chapter concerns Fellini's most important subject and obsession: the Woman in all her appearances. Not seldom the breasts of a woman are his favorite film attribute as a metaphor for (giving) life and the discovery of one's own sexuality which seems life itself to Fellini.
4) Biographical Imagination - Here particular attention is given to Fellini's 'Book of Dreams' in which he recorded his dreams in words and drawings. Some scenes appear somehow in his films too but at least give a great sight in his private inner world and his perspective on the outer public world.
The impressive environment of EYE alone is already worth to take the ferry. When you like to use a drink at the panorama terrace of their bar/restaurant with it's glorious view on the IJ water, be sure to make a reservation at the reception counter. We didn't want to wait to be seated and just climbed the stairs. Once we sat outside the coffee tasted just as good!
